03 Nadine Gordimer – Marriages

Nadine married Gerald Gavron, who worked as a local dentist, in 1949. Together they had a daughter Oriane who was born in 1950. Nadine and Gerald divorced after three years. In 1954, Nadine married Reinhold Cassirer, a highly respected German art dealer and collector. He established the Sotheby’s South Africa; a fine art auction house now known as Stephan Welz & Co. and eventually ran his own gallery. Their wonderful marriage led to the birth of their son Hugo in 1955, who later became a film maker based in New York and has three children. Hugo collaborated with his mother on two documentaries. Reinhold died in 2001 due to emphysema.
