NIHSS BRICS Project
International Collaboration on Teaching and Learning During Crises
Overview
This project is a collaborative initiative under the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) grant.
It brings together:
- SARChI Chair in Teacher Education at CPUT
- Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai
- SARChI Chair in Teaching and Learning at the University of Johannesburg
The project centres around a seminar series of four scholarly symposia, with peer-reviewed publications as its key outputs.
Project Focus
Framed around the themes of crisis and disruption—particularly the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in India and South Africa—this initiative explores how both countries responded to disruptions in education.
The project aims to:
- Collaborate with researchers, academics, and postgraduate students
- Foster debate and discussion through scholarly engagement
- Develop and implement a high-level symposium module
- Reimagine research, teaching, and learning during educational crises
Symposia and Outputs
- Four hybrid symposia planned
- Three held in South Africa
- One held in India; a fourth planned for January 2023 in India
Publication outputs in progress:
- A Special Issue
- A Monograph authored by PhD students and Postdoctoral Research Fellows (PDRFs)
