Finance and Investment Management Olympiad (FIMO)
The FIMO (Finance and Investment Management Olympiad) is an initiative of the Department of Finance and Investment Management at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), that is focused on encouraging Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners to unleash their potential in a dynamic field. It is sponsored by STRATE, an independent provider of post-trade products and services for financial markets.
The Olympiad offers more insight into the finance and investment industry and offers exciting prizes! This year is the third annual Olympiad and it will be taking place across all nine provinces.
The Olympiad consists of two written rounds of which the first will be taking place on the 23rd of May 2018. Qualifying learners will go through to the 2nd and final round on the 24th of July 2018. All learners entered who wrote the 1st round will receive a Certificate from the University of Johannesburg. Learners will be provided with learning guides for the first and the second round. The winners will be honoured at a gala event later in the year. Prizes will also be awarded to the best school and Teacher or Organiser.
Getting your school in on the UJ FIMO action is as easy as completing the entry form. The closing date is
27 March 2018. Entry fees of
R50 per learner apply.

The topic areas which form part of the Finance and Investment Management Olympiad include:
- Financial Literacy: Saving and borrowing
- Financial Markets and Instruments
- Financial Math
- Interest Rates
- Risk and Return
- Time value of money
- Financial Statements
- Financial System
An understanding of Grade 10 Economics, Accounting and Math is required for the Olympiad; however it will not be included in the provided study material. If you need assistance with Economics and Financial Statements, please refer to Investopedia:
