• 3 April 2024: University of Johannesburg Graduation for ACEPS 3 newest PhDs (l-r): Dr Abraham Tejiri Tobi, their supervisor Prof Veli Mitova, Dr Dimpho Takane Maponya and Dr Akanimo Andrew Akpan

Why ACEPS?

ACEPS became the top centre in University of Johannesburg in 2024 by hosting a significant number of international visitors, conferences and projects. Check out and apply for a grant to do a MA, PhD or PostDoc Fellowship at UJ, NRF, NRF PostGrad grants, NRF MA&PhDs, NIHSS, Society for Applied Philosophy.  Regardless, if you publish one paper (or more) in an accredited journal a year, your fees for that year will be paid, your research account gets R20,000/paper and you will be sponsored to attend an international conference to give a talk! At ACEPS, you get what you put in but with enough hand-holding to make you fly! If you are not feeling appreciated at your current university, why not consider UJ and especially ACEPS as a great alternative?

Interested in doing your Honours, MA, PhD or PDRF in Philosophy at ACEPS?

  • Be supervised by Cambridge graduate and ACEPS director and Professor of Philosophy  Prof Veli Mitova?
  • ACEPS offers bursaries for PostGrads and PDRFs dependent on performance.
  • Access to an extensive international network of RAs, contacts and visitors?
  • Attend and present at local and international conferences? See ACEPS and Talks
  • Attend weekly work-in-progress and writing retreats for hands-on supervision? See WIP & writing retreats
  • Gain experience as a paid research assistant? Up to you if you want it.
  • Get published in international journals which you will need for an international career in academia.

Have a look at Team & PostGrads to see what our PostGrads are working on and the other ACEPS links to get a good idea of what ACEPS does and whether it is a good fit for you. And if you think you have what it takes, then ACEPS director Prof Veli Mitova  wants to hear from you with:

  • A motivation letter explaining how your work will contribute to ACEPS
  • Your academic transcripts
  • Your CV
  • A one-page proposal (for MA and PhDs)

Or just contact me directly if you have already been accepted for an Honours, MA or PhD at UJ Department of Philosophy.

It is best to apply as early as possible so that any issues can be resolved, especially where this relates to funding and visas. Honours, MAs and PhD candidates can  go to Postgraduates Admissions+Aid for help. Postdoctoral candidates should go to Postdoctoral Research Fellows for help. International PostDoctoral candidates must apply only for a Visitor’s visa section 11(1)(b)(ii)  directly from a South African embassy. They also need to get a SAQA, which can also take up to three months.

Looking forward to hearing from you but if in doubt just ask.
