About Prof Sam Ramaila

Professor Sam Ramaila’s academic journey showcases a strong foundation in science education and a commitment to scholarly excellence. He earned his PhD from the University of Johannesburg and an MSc in Physics from the University of the Witwatersrand. His academic path began at the University of Limpopo, where he completed a BSc, BSc Honours, and a Higher Education Diploma (HED), equipping him with both scientific expertise and pedagogical training. Currently a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education at the University of Johannesburg, Prof Ramaila is a respected scholar in physics education. He serves as Chairperson of the Physics for Development, Education, and Outreach Division of the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP). He played a leading role in the SAIP-led Review of Undergraduate Physics Education in Public Higher Education Institutions project, which culminated in the national Strategy for the Enhancement of Physics Training in South Africa. Prof Ramaila’s research interests lie at the intersection of science education, teacher development, and innovative pedagogical practices. His work explores teacher professional development, innovative pedagogical practices, and contemporary instructional models, with numerous publications in national and international journals. He has published book chapters and presented at prominent academic conferences. An accomplished supervisor, he has successfully guided many Master’s and PhD students to completion. Prof Ramaila is also a dedicated advocate for science outreach, engaging schools and universities to promote scientific literacy and inspire future scientists. His contributions have been recognized through prestigious awards and his continued involvement in professional organizations, affirming his leadership in the field. Through his work in research, policy, and teaching, Prof Sam Ramaila remains a transformative figure in South African and global physics education.
