Politics and International Relations Programmes

The Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Johannesburg offers a broad range of programmes designed to develop critical thinking and interdisciplinary skills essential for understanding complex political and global issues.

 

Undergraduate Programmes

At the undergraduate level, students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree with flexible specializations, allowing them to tailor their studies to their interests within the fields of politics and international relations. Alternatively, they may choose the Bachelor of Arts with a specialization in Politics, Economics, and Technology (BA PET), a three-year multidisciplinary programme that explores the intersections of society, governance, economics, and technological innovation

 

Postgraduate Programmes

Postgraduate offerings include HonoursMaster’s, and Doctoral degrees that deepen expertise through advanced coursework and research.

  • The BA Honours programme incorporates compulsory research methodology training alongside elective modules covering topics such as South African politics, gender studies, international organisations, and political risk analysis.
  • Master’s students undertake dissertation research demonstrating advanced critical and analytical skills. Graduates often pursue careers in public service, academia, media, and political office.
  • The PhD programme prepares candidates for careers in academia, research institutions, government, international organisations, and policy-making roles. This reflects UJ’s commitment to high-quality scholarship, innovative teaching, and impactful research in political studies.
