Research Profile

Professor Carl Marnewick is a leading scholar in the field of Information Technology Project Management, with a research career that spans both conceptual contributions and real-world applications. Holding a PhD in Computer Science and rated C3 by South Africa’s National Research Foundation, he is widely recognised for advancing knowledge on the digitalisation of project management and benefits realisation in agile environments.

At the University of Johannesburg, Professor Marnewick plays a strategic role in shaping the department’s research agenda. His work addresses contemporary challenges brought about by digital transformation, agile methodologies, and sustainability demands in project environments. His current research collaborations span Africa, Europe, and North America, underscoring a strong commitment to global scholarship.

A key focus of his research is benefits realisation management in scaled agile environments, developed in collaboration with partners at the University of Quebec in Montreal. This work has produced high-impact outputs, including a widely cited article in the International Journal of Project Management.

He also leads groundbreaking work on the digitalisation of project management, culminating in the development of the Project Management Digitalization Research Agenda Cube. This framework serves as a guide for researchers and practitioners aiming to adapt project management to new technological realities.

Another ongoing research initiative involves integrating sustainability into project-oriented organisations. In partnership with Prof Gilbert Silvius (LOI University, Netherlands), this project explores how sustainability strategies can be effectively implemented at the portfolio and project levels, contributing both theoretical insights and practical frameworks.

Publications and Research Impact

Professor Marnewick has authored over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles10 academic books, and 54 conference papers. His research appears in top international journals, including:

He has an H-index of 18 (Scopus) and 30 (Google Scholar), with 17% of his publications in the top 10% of global journals. A quarter of his work is co-authored with international collaborators, reflecting a strong international research orientation.

Professor Marnewick has successfully supervised:

  • 14 Doctoral students

His students have produced research on topics including agile project methodologies, IT project complexity, digital transformation, and the role of sustainability in project success.
