About Professor Neshane Harvey

Prof Neshane Harvey is the Head of Department: Fashion Design in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). In 2006 she completed her Master’s in Education at UJ with a study entitled “The role of assessor training in promoting reflective assessment practice”. As such, the master’s study focused on education and reflective assessment practices. In 2018, she completed a PhD entitled “A Human centered design approach to fashion design education”. In this ground-breaking PhD, she challenged the conventional scope of fashion design education with an alternative ethos, thinking and approach to fashion design education and praxis. As such, her research foci grounds itself in the scholarship of teaching and learning in fashion design education, design methodologies in fashion design processes and praxis. She currently teaches design relating to social design as well as participatory/co-design across undergraduate levels. In addition, she teaches research methodology as well as design theory associated with human-centered and social design. At postgraduate levels, she supervisor’s in MA: Design and BA Honours: Design programmes. She was also the beneficiary of several internal and external grants namely: 1) the prestigious National Research Foundation (NRF) Thuthuka, 2) The DHET, and 3) UJ’s Accelerated Academic Mentorship Programme. As part of the NRF Thuthuka funding, in 2014, she was invited to present a paper at the Fashion Thinking: Theory, History, Practice conference held in Denmark, hosted by the Design School Kolding, University of Southern Denmark, The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and Design Museum Denmark. She also served as part of the blind review committee for several Design Education Forum of Southern Africa (DEFSA) conferences, the Cumulus Johannesburg conference, the NRF as well as the Journal of Consumer Science. In addition to research, Neshane is also recognized for her leadership in teaching and learning in fashion design education as evident in her role as programme review chairperson for fashion qualifications offered at South African Higher Education Institutions. She collaborates with a number of South African Higher Education Institutions as advisory board member and external moderator. In 2014, Neshane was nominated for the Emerging Leadership Programme for which she graduated with a Cum Laude. In 2016, she was awarded highly competent in the CHERTL Strengthening Postgraduate Supervision Course. She is also a beneficiary of UJ’s Accelerated Academic Mentorship Programme and is instrumental in developing research capacity in the scholarship of Teaching and Learning as evident in her research footprint: Accredited publications: Harvey, N.
