About Dr Daniel Rodrigues Van Niekerk
Academic Profile
Dr. Daniel Rodrigues van Niekerk is a Lecturer in the department of Electrical Engineering Technology. He obtained a National Diploma and B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR) in 1998 and 1999 respectively. He then spent three years working as a Junior Design Technologist at Circuit Breaker Industries (CBI) from 2000 to 2003, developing electricity-metering products based on established specifications. He then spent another three years working as a Senior Design Technologist at Circuit Breaker Industries (CBI) from 2003 to 2006, developing electronic protection earth leakage products based on established specifications. In 2006, Dr van Niekerk started lecturing at the University of Johannesburg and obtained a Magister Technologiae (M-Tech) and PHD degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2009 and 2021 respectively at the University of Johannesburg. He has been actively involved in SAIEE sponsored school community engagement projects. His research interests are: microcontroller systems; PLC & HMI control systems and electrical protection. Dr. van Niekerk is registered as a professional Engineering Technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), is an active member of IEEE.

Biography
Daniel van Niekerk completed his first degree in Electrical Engineering in 1999 from Technikon Witwatersrand. In 2000, he joined Circuit Breaker Industries, where he was involved in developing electricity metering products and earth leakage products based on established specifications. In 2006, he joined the University of Johannesburg as a lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology. He subsequently obtained a master’s degree at the University of Johannesburg in 2009. He then obtained a Ph.D. in electrical and electronic engineering at the University of Johannesburg in 2021. He is professionally registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). His research interests include Electrical Surge Protection, Microcontroller, and Power Electronic Systems, Industrial Automation Systems, Community Engagement STEM Projects.
