The University of Johannesburg herbarium (also known as JRAU) was established in 1975. It houses about 20 000 local collections of vascular plant families such as Asteracea, Apiaceae, and Fabaceae, including those used for medicinal and ornamental purposes. The herbarium was specifically established to provide training and academic support for undergraduate and postgraduate students doing taxonomic, systematics and medicinal plant research. In addition, plant information services (particularly plant identification) for the university community and members of the public are provided.
