The study on the size and shape of postgraduate studies in South Africa was commissioned by the Council for Higher Education (CHE).
It investigated trends and patterns of progression in postgraduate studies, analysing data by study level, race, and gender.
The analysis further disaggregated enrolment, completion, and dropout rates.

The significance of postgraduate data for South Africa’s future in academia and knowledge production is considerable.
Increasing postgraduate enrolment in both numbers and quality is essential for the country to transition to a knowledge economy
and achieve the ambitious goals of the National Development Plan for 2030. Furthermore, postgraduate statistics help develop targeted
interventions and assistance required to support the growth of postgraduate studies.
