The Department’s academic programmes at undergraduate exit levels (3rd Year) have a practical component. This involves teams engaging with industry and developing industry projects that are of practical relevance and value. The academic requirements for 2013 were that the industry projects had to include appropriate interfaces for administrator class users and normal class users, a mobile application and the use of Near Field Communication (NFC). The winning team developed a solution for the “The Woods” paintball centre for general sales and player administration. Through the use of touch devices, mobile apps and NFC, management and customers can quickly, accurately and intuitively access information, make sales and accurately score games.

Another valuable partnership is CoachLab that saw 15 of our postgraduate students in this partnership. This is a 9-month leadership development programme, which aims to instil the principles of value-added innovation and entrepreneurship in all participants through mentorship by the project sponsors. This is a leadership development programme that effectively bridges the gap that exists between the academic and business milieu. Students are developed into ICT leaders, as they participate in stimulating action-learning projects where they are given real challenges within the actual workplace, while being encouraged to apply innovative thinking to deliver solutions that truly add value. This year our students developed a mortuary management system that will replace the current manual system being used by Gauteng Forensic Pathology Service.
