With the general agreement that environmental issues and development are no longer mutually exclusive, Public and Environmental Economics Research Centre (PEERC) has the dual mission of knowledge creation and dissemination in the fields of Public and Environmental economics. PEERC was established in 2017 and is housed within the College of Business and Economics' School of Economics at the University of Johannesburg. In 2018, PEERC received generous seed funding from University Research Committee (URC).
PEERC's overarching objective is to undertake Public and Environmental economics research that addresses real problems and directly feeds into policy. This is to be translated into active participation in national, regional and international research projects and publications in scholarly journals, discussion papers and policy briefs. In addition, our staffs are involved in teaching at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels. Moreover, we also offer short courses and training particularly to public servants.
