EMBRACING THE FUTURE IN THE SPIRIT OF UBUNTU

“The only thing that is constant is change.” – Heraclitus UJ continues to play a nurturing, but pioneering role in restructuring higher education in Africa. It is incumbent upon UJ to continue to renew, develop and diversify this ancient profession that is so critical to our continent. However, “change” is here and it is happening at a fast pace due to technological and digital disruptions. This “change” has a great impact on the concept of the “University of the Future.” There is no doubt that the “University of the Future” will look slightly different to what we have come accustomed to. Some argue that universities will struggle to keep up with the everchanging force of technology. However, regardless of what the future may look like, “learning” will always survive.

There will always be new innovations and people will always be seeking new ideas to satisfy the mind. There will always be a need for some form of “university,” a place where open innovation and analytical minds can thrive and the future is shaped – without limiting processes. The challenge is to develop and adapt to these new approaches to research, teaching and learning.

This can only be achieved through collaborative, forward-thinking and creative academics, tutors and students. This means that the work of our educators is never done. In the spirit of Ubuntu, UJ continues to ‘rethink’ education and we encourage our students to reinvent themselves. We don’t have a choice but to reimagine our future, a future with great possibilities.

We often hear that the saddest summary of life contains three descriptions: could have, might have, and should have. We, at the University of Johannesburg, are taking the leap without fear, favour or prejudice. We are shaping the future one inquisitive-student-mind at a time and we urge all staff, stakeholders, students and alumni to never settle for the status quo, but to continue to question everything. The time is now and the clock is ticking… Our Global Excellence and Stature (GES) flagship programmes reflect of our commitment to purposefully reimagine where it is needed most.

PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Research and Innovation Chairs

The South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) was established in 2006 by the then Department of Science and Technology (now Department of Science and Innovation) under the custodianship of the National Research Foundation (NRF). The programme was “designed to attract and retain excellence in research and innovation at South African public universities…”, and have a strong focus on the production of “high quality postgraduate students and research and innovation outputs”

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) was awarded its first SARChI Chair in 2009 and now hosts a total seventeen (17) SARChI Chairs spread across all its Faculties and College.
