About Ms. Nomalanga Mahlangu

Nomalanga Mahlangu is an artist, professional architect, and lecturer from Moloto, Mpumalanga. She holds a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Johannesburg, as well as a bachelor’s degree in architectural studies from the University of Witwatersrand. Currently, she works as a lecturer at the University of Johannesburg, where she coordinates the second-year degree curriculum within the undergraduate program and co-leads Unit 15X at the Graduate School of Architecture (GSA). As part of her academic responsibilities, over the past few years, she has had the privilege of examining students at several universities in South Africa, interacting with both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Driven by a passion for exploring alternative approaches to architectural education, her research interests are motivated with a focus on interrogating the impacts of colonisation and apartheid on our understanding of space and spatial theories in South Africa. Her academic journey has fostered collaborations with numerous architecture schools across South Africa and beyond. Notable among these are partnerships with the University of Venda (2024), University of Botswana (2023), University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (2019), and Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda (2018).

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Nomalanga is actively engaged in research endeavours that span various platforms, from conferences and panel discussions to book launches and university exchange programs. In 2023, she presented an abstract at the Design Education Forum of Southern Africa (DEFSA) and participated in a panel discussion with WIA Think Tank, hosted by the GSA. She also contributed to a knowledge exchange program with the Kingston School of Arts in London and co-hosted the book launch event for “100 Women: Architects in Practice” in South Africa. Most recently, she presented another abstract at the Production Studies International Conference 2024 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
