About Ms. Nomalanga Mahlangu

Nomalanga Mahlangu is an artist, professional architect, and lecturer from Moloto, Mpumalanga. She holds a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Johannesburg, as well as a bachelor’s degree in architectural studies from the University of the Witwatersrand. She is currently a lecturer at the University of Johannesburg, where she serves as the year coordinator for the second-year degree stream.

Driven by a passion for exploring alternative approaches to architectural education, her research interrogates the impact of apartheid on our understanding of space and spatial politics, with a particular focus on townships and former Bantustans. Her academic journey has led to collaborations with several architecture schools across South Africa and beyond. Notable among these are partnerships with Kingston University London, England (2024); the University of Venda, South Africa (2024); the University of Botswana (2023); the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (2019); and Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda (2018).
