Urban and Regional Planning is a multi-faceted profession aimed at enhancing the quality of life of people through the planning, designing, implementation and management of the environment in which people live. As such, the profession rests upon two pillars, namely Spatial Planning and Land Use Management. These pillars are deeply entrenched in the ideal of Public Interest (PI). The Spatial Planning pillar has a visionary thrust, while the Land Use Management consists of management directives relating to the use of land. Urban and Regional Planning finds expression through institutions and has a bearing on the management of the natural environment, the performance of the economy, and the social experience in spaces.
