After Nadine Petersen’s D.Ed study of the 2004 first cohort of curricular service learning students the community engagement programme in the faculty adopted the model that she developed in her study. Currently, the partnerships between the schools and the faculty aim to educate the students about the value of serving marginalized and struggling school communities while learning to live with such educational realities.

At present three tiers of students (B Ed 4th year, PGCE’s, B Ed (Hons) and M Ed Educational Psychology students) offer a variety of educational, counseling and support services to the pupils (and their parents), the teachers and where necessary the wider community of the partner schools and organization.

Education As Change 11(3) – special issue on Community Service Learning contains articles on research conducted in the community engagement programme of the faculty.
