About Dr Mohamed Shahid Mathee
Brief Professional Biography
Dr Mohamed Shahid Mathee is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Religion Studies at the University of Johannesburg. He obtained his BA Honours from Al-Azhar University (Egypt) in Islamic law, Masters in Social Sciences from the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Cape Town (UCT), and PhD in Historical Studies from UCT. He currently teaches postgraduate (Honours and Masters) modules and supervises Masters and Doctoral students. His research focuses on marriage, divorce, and paternity-dispute fatwas from the colonial era as a source for social history and Timbuktu’s twentieth-century chronicles.
