University of Johannesburg (UJ) is committed to the transformation of the South African economy through the adoption of the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) framework.

UJ believes that all South African business enterprises have an equal obligation to redress the imbalances of the past by facilitating constructive participation by Black South Africans at all levels within our economy. Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises (SMME’s) offer significant value to the economy and are contributing almost 50% towards South Africa’s Gross Domestic Product.

For this reason, the University of Johannesburg embarked on investing on Enterprise and Supplier Development, this in order to accomplish one of the strategic imperatives, which form part of UJ’s overall drive to improve and support black-owned companies, by making sure that they can compete within the University of Johannesburg’s Procurement and Tender process.

The objective of the Enterprise Development programme is to create a solid business base for entrepreneurial people and in turn create further employment.

University of Johannesburg’s objectives towards Enterprise and Supplier Development:

  • To Support the introduction and development of Black Owned SMME businesses within its Finance Expenditure (FINEX) department.
  • To offer consistent and structured application of E&SD projects.
  • To focus on sustainability of the ED and SD beneficiaries.
  • To support strategic Procurement plans.
  • To achieve meaningful value through effective use of ED and SD funds.

We recognise that by enabling our entrepreneurs and South Africa’s future economic growth. Enterprise and Supplier Development is set out with the specific objectives of delivering the following benefits:

  • Improvements in service level, operations, supplier administration and skills.
  • Improving supplier performance.
  • Reducing costs.
  • Resolving quality issues; and
  • Improving business relationship between the suppliers and the University.
