About Dr Shandre Pillay

Dr Shandré Pillay is the Postgraduate Student Experience Coordinator at the Research Capacity Development unit and intends to use her experience as a postgraduate to improve the learning experience of others. Prior to this, Dr Pillay was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine, based at the University of Cape Town (2022 -2023).

Dr Pillay holds the following qualifications:

  • PhD in Clinical Sciences and Immunology – University of Cape Town
  • MSc in Biochemistry (cum laude) – University of KwaZulu Natal
  • Honours in Biochemistry – University of KwaZulu Natal
  • BSc Life and Earth Sciences: Biochemistry and Microbiology – University of KwaZulu Natal

Her main area of research focuses on the identification, functional validation and therapeutic targeting of host factors and pathways that play a role in tuberculosis disease progression and host immunity, both in murine and human model systems. Ultimately, with the aim of developing an effective host-directed drug therapy against tuberculosis. She has presented and received awards at various national and international conferences, as well as published in several international journals.
