About Prof Matthijs Bal

Prof Matthijs Bal is currently Professor of Responsible Management at the University of Lincoln’s Business School in the UK. Since 2016 he has published 57 articles/book chapters contributing to an h- index of 31 with 4772 citations.

Although known for his quantitative research, Professor Bal has recently become more critical, challenging researchers in the domain of Work and Organizational Psychology to take responsibility for their research in relation to neoliberal ideology. Moreover, he has even taken up the role of an academic ‘activist’ as the first author of a Manifesto for the future of Work and Organizational Psychology, published by the prestigious European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology.

Apart from his research in the domain of Work and Organizational Psychology, Prof Bal’s other macro focus area is Human Resource Management, which makes for an ideal research partner with our department in which both these disciplines reside. Between the end of the last year and the beginning of this year, Professor Bal has published two articles with UJ as affiliation. He is currently preparing with Mr Pharny Chrysler-Fox an article, in which the effect of global and facet-based measures of perceptions of psychological contract breach and the impact on threshold models, for submission to an international journal during 2019. Two additional projects are currently underway with Prof Rene van Wyk and Mr Pharny Chrysler-Fox, where (a) forgiveness is examined during perceptions of psychological contract breach (data already collected), and (b) dignity is examined during perceptions of psychological contract breach (data to be collected in June 2019).
