About Ms. Tasmiya Chandlay

Tasmiya Chandlay is an architectural practitioner, artist, design researcher, toy/game developer, and educator based in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is an alumna of both the Department of Architecture and the Graduate School of Architecture (GSA) at the University of Johannesburg.

In her current role as a lecturer in the Department of Architecture, Tasmiya reimagines architectural education by encouraging students to think critically, challenge institutional narratives, and develop independent, self-authored perspectives. She is committed to fostering an environment where diverse voices and unconventional approaches are valued.

Her research is driven by a deep interest in the institutions that shape (and sometimes unravel) our societies. She investigates the intersections of identity, culture, background, and bias in the making of architecture and community. Through this lens, she works to reveal the underlying forces that inform spatial and institutional decisions, aiming to foster design practices that are inclusive, equitable, and representative of diverse lived experiences.
