About Dries Pretorius

General Counsel

Dries Pretorius has almost 25 years of varied and in-depth legal experience and has been the General Counsel to UJ since July 2021.He has been the legal counsel to some truly impressive groups, where he headed up full function legal departments, of amongst others, Unitrans; Barloworld Logistics, Chlor-Alkali Holdings and Sail.  He has gained some valuable experience at Murray & Roberts Cementation.  Prior to moving into the corporate sector, he spent eight years as a practicing attorney and was admitted as such in 1999.

Dries has strong foundations in commercial and corporate and is a specialist generalist with an in-depth and detailed knowledge of the legal and commercial subject areas that impact on modern businesses and institutions.  These include contracting, contract negotiations, commercial, corporate, mergers & acquisitions, competition, risk, compliance, litigation and various others and in industries such as logistics, chemical, mining, manufacturing, financial, higher education and others.

He excels at effectively and efficiently implementing, managing and motivating modern legal (risk/compliance) departments.
