About Dr Viren Ramdhany
Dr Viren Ramdhany hails from KwaZulu-Natal, where he spent many years teaching English Home Language and Mathematics at high school level. He completed his PhD at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), with a focus on teacher knowledge and practice—an area that continues to inform his research and teaching.
Following his doctoral studies, Dr Ramdhany completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) before joining the University of Johannesburg (UJ). His scholarly interests lie in understanding how mathematics teachers think about and enact their practice across varied educational contexts.
He is particularly concerned with the quality and accessibility of mathematics education. In line with Schoenfeld’s idea of “teaching for robust understanding,” he believes that while not all teachers need to be social justice advocates, ensuring equitable and meaningful access to mathematics learning must remain a core priority in education.
For Dr Ramdhany, true success lies in his students recognising this imperative. If they come to value the importance of equitable, thoughtful mathematics education, then he considers his work well done.
