About Dr Rebecca Alowo

Academic Profile 

Dr Rebecca Alowo is a Lecturer of Water Engineering at Doornfontein. She holds a doctorate from Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein, Free State. She also holds masters from University of Cambridge in Engineering for Sustainable Development and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Makerere university in Kampala Uganda. She is a member of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and the Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers (UIPE). Her doctoral studies were on sustainable groundwater management through modelling of selected hydrological parameters: a case study of the Modder River catchment of South Africa. Her findings were that it is necessary to develop groundwater sustainability models using Artificial Intelligence for groundwater monitoring to make informed decisions for improved groundwater management.

Qualification(s)
Doctorate from Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein, Free State. She also holds masters from University of Cambridge in Engineering for Sustainable Development and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Makerere university in Kampala Uganda. She is a member of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and the Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers.
Research Interests
Dr Rebecca Alowo’s research interest is mainly water engineering based. She resraches linkages between water engineering and (to mention but a few); water resource management, hydrological factors, groundwater, climate change, artificial intelligence, hydraulics, and WASH

Biography
Dr Alowo has worked in Uganda, as head of policy/research/ campaigns, policy analyst for water/sanitation, monitoring/evaluation officer and programme development officer for WaterAid. She also worked for the Ministry of Water and Environment, Directorate of Water Development under an African development bank project and BKS global while still in Uganda, after leaving Makerere University. She conducted her industrial training in Botswana with EMC consulting and Acts consulting, having started with site work under Murray and Roberts first, during the construction of the University of Botswana library. Overall, she has over ten years progressive experience in engineering, natural resource management, and research, on emerging sustainable development issues and themes. She has worked in planning, leading comprehensive development strategies, creation of monitoring/evaluation tools and steering the execution of impact assessment programmes in support of various Global Goals. She has a passion to demonstrate success in driving growth in development programmes through the implementation of key projects. She is always open to learning solid leadership skills: she desires to build and guide implementing partners and work with diverse teams. She is always keen to communicate with management, strategic partners, alliances, and internal departments to coordinate overall efforts. She is keen to embrace any outstanding interpersonal skills.
