SOUTH AFRICAN COUNCIL FOR SOCIAL SERVICE PROFESSIONS
The South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) is the statutory body which regulates social service professions in South Africa.
The SACSSP, under the Professional Board for Social Work, is mandated to manage policy matters regarding the profession and attends to the edcuational development, professional registration and professional conduct of the social work profession and practitioners.
All social workers, social auxiliary workers and student social workers (from the second year of study) are compelled to register with the SACSSP.
The programmes offered at the Department of Social Work are of a high standard and are accredited by the SACSSP. The latest site visit by the SACSSP to the Department of Social Work was in June 2012.

COUNCIL ON HIGHER EDUCATION
The Council on Higher Education is largely responsible for the accreditation of higher education programmes in South Africa. The Higher Education Act of 1997 assigns responsibility for quality assurance in higher education in South Africa to the Council on Higher Education (CHE). This responsibility is discharged through its permanent sub-committee, the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC). The mandate of the HEQC includes quality promotion, institutional audit and programme accreditation.
The Department of Social Work welcomes the members of the Council on Higher Education (HEQC) to this University on the forthcoming site visit in September 2013.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORKERS- SOUTH AFRICA
The National Association of Social Workers-South Africa, is an association that was formed in September 2007 to bring together all the different associations in the country. Whilst membership is voluntary, many members of staff at the Department of Social Work at UJ are members of this association.
Members of staff also present papers at the conferences of the NASW-SA.

ASSOCIATION OF THE SCHOOLS OF SOCIAL WORK EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
The Department of Social Work is proud to be a long-standing member of ASASWEI.
Vision and Mission
The vision of the association shall be: To be the leading association in the promotion of social work education, training and research in South Africa in collaboration with the international community in pursuit of enhanced psychosocial functioning of individuals families, groups, organisations and communities, and of human rights, social justice and equality of all the people of South Africa.
The mission of the association shall be: “To maintain and support a community of social work educators who are committed to the continuing development of social work education, training, research and practice in South Africa.
In pursuing its mission and vision the association aims to:
1. Facilitate collaboration and exchange of information on social work education, training research and practice with relevant networks (governmental and non-governmental) on national, regional and international levels.
2. Develop strategies that enhance the recognition of social work as a profession.
3. Promote recognition of the contribution of social work to social and economic development and to the transformation of South African society.
4. Support the development of appropriate and locally specific research, theory and practice.
5. Contribute to the development and implementation of social welfare and education policies in the South African context.
