Brief description of programme: This course comprises the study of Literary Theory, and electives include World Literature, Colonial and Postcolonial Literature, and Renaissance/Romantic/Victorian literature. Students pursue individual interests in the course of writing a research essay. In certain cases, the research essay can be presented as a piece of creative writing written by the student, with an analysis of this creative text.
MA (English) Research Master’s
Once they have been conditionally accepted, applicants for the Master’s Degree in English must submit a title and brief synopsis of their proposed study, before they can be considered for admission to the programme.

Brief description of programme: Students accepted for this course are required to research, write and present a dissertation of around 40 000 words, under the guidance of a supervisor. In exceptional cases, the student may be able to write a Master’s dissertation by at least 2 article-length and -format pieces of writing, framed by an introduction and conclusion. The Department is able to supervise topics in most areas under the general ambit of English studies.
DLitt et Phil (English)
Admission requirements: A Master’s degree in English is required.
Duration of programme: 3 years
Once they have been conditionally accepted, applicants for the DLitt et Phil Degree in English must submit a title and brief synopsis of their proposed study, before they can be considered for admission to the programme.

Brief description of programme: Students accepted for this course are required to research, write and present a full thesis (80 000 words), which contributes new knowledge to the field of English Studies. In exceptional cases, the student may be able to write a doctoral dissertation by at least 4 article-length and -format pieces of writing, framed by an introduction and conclusion. The Department is able to supervise topics in most areas under the general ambit of English studies.
The MA and the DLitt et Phil in English are conferred on the successful completion of a dissertation and a thesis respectively. The MA dissertation must show evidence of research ability and independent thinking. The doctoral thesis must, in addition, make an original contribution to the chosen field of study. Prospective masters and doctoral candidates are required to submit a research proposal and bibliography, which will be assessed and vetted through the postgraduate coordinator in consultation with relevant members of staff.
