​​Postgraduate studies in African Languages:

HONOURS DEGREES
Name of programme:
BA Hons (African Languages)

Admission requirements: Students who have obtained an undergraduate qualification with Northern Sotho (or Sepedi) or Zulu (or isiZulu) as a major and who meet the general University entrance requirements for the Honours programme may be considered for the programme.

Students who do not meet the requirement of one of the specified African languages as a major may in meritorious cases apply to the RPL committee to be admitted.

Full-time: 1 year

Part-time: 1½ years

Brief description of programme: The course consists of five modules. Modules 1 (Research Essay), 2 (Grammar of the Main Language) and 3 (Literature of the Main Language) are compulsory. The student chooses two other modules from the following possibilities:

• Literature: Poetry, Prose, Drama, Oral Art

• Linguistics: Sociolinguistics, Phonology and Morphology, Syntax and Semantics, Translation Studies


BA Hons (African Studies)

Admission requirements: A degree with major in a particular discipline and a final mark of at least 65% in the particular discipline.

Duration of programme:
Full-time: 1 year
Part-time: 1½ years

Cost (2018/2019): Between R29 000 and R31 000 per year

MASTER’S DEGREES (MA)
Name of programme:
MA: (African Languages) Coursework

Admission requirements: Students who have obtained a BA Honours with a mark of at least 60% (but preferably higher) in Northern Sotho (Sesotho sa Lebowa/Sepedi) or isiZulu may register.

Duration of programme: 2 years

Brief description of programme: A student registers for the Research Methodology module, as well as one elective coursework module in linguistics or literature. The student writes a minor dissertation on a topic in linguistics or literature giving evidence of the ability to conduct research.

Admission requirements: Students who have obtained a BA Honours with a mark of at least 60% (but preferably higher) in Northern Sotho (Sesotho sa Lebowa/ Sepedi) or isiZulu may register.

Duration of programme: 2 years

Brief description of programme: A student writes a dissertation on a topic in linguistics or literature giving evidence of the ability to conduct research. This document will be about 100 pages long.


DOCTORAL DEGREES

Name of programme:
​DLitt et Phil (African Languages)

Admission requirements: Students must have obtained an MA in African Languages.

Duration of programme: 3 years

Brief description of programme: The Doctoral examination is conducted on at least two fields of study. A thesis is presented on a topic in linguistics or in literature as proof of the ability to conduct research and as proof of a unique contribution to science. An article ready for publication is submitted with the thesis.
