Podiatry is a specialist field that focuses on improving the overall health and well-being of patients in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the foot and lower-limb. Podiatrists provide pain relief from foot deformities, injuries and wounds through palliative means, minor surgery or through the prescription of foot orthoses to re-align foot or leg imbalances. 

 

Podiatrists are important team players in the preventative care and management of patients with systemic conditions such as Diabetes and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Podiatrists often recognise systemic medical conditions in patients where manifestation of the condition first occurs in the foot. This can be a very lucrative, dynamic and challenging vocation for anyone who wishes to follow a medically orientated career. 

Job opportunities exist in private practice, industry, and the state health services. 



The purpose of the qualification is to develop a student competent in the knowledge and skills required for the Podiatry profession. To devise and deliver planned evidence-based podiatry programmes of care to patients who have a Podiatric/medical need both in the private and public health sector. To provide holistic patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment plans and refer appropriately to other professional disciplines.

To act as a specialist information and advice resource to patients, colleagues, carers, other health care professionals within a multidisciplinary team in order to provide patient centred care and ensure best practice.  To work as an autonomous practitioner or as part of a team to assess specialist clinical conditions, consider a range of management options and make informed clinical decisions. To contribute to the development of the profession, continuing life-long education and becoming a reflective practitioner. Demonstrate skills in research and manag ement allowing the holder of this qualification to work in a supervisory capacity within the Podiatry profession. Successful completion of this qualification will entitle the student to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Podiatrist.
