NRF Funded Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship Award

The South African Research Chair in (SARChI) Teaching and Learning (T&L), located at the University of Johannesburg, generates basic and applied knowledge about the form, content, and impact of teaching and learning in the Post School Education and Training (PSET) sector. The SARChI T&L is focused on developing a knowledge base in the field of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning by investing significantly in the building research capacity and the generating a pool of researchers working in associated areas. The fellowship targets doctoral graduates who wish to pursue a career in teaching and research. Successful candidates will work closely with the incumbent Chair.

The NRF Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants must have graduated with their doctoral degree within four (4) years of applying to the NRF. For this Call, applicants must have graduated with their doctoral degree no later than 31 December 2018.
  • Applicants who are currently completing their doctoral dissertation for submission may apply. They should however complete their doctoral degree by 31 December 2023, as
  • all awards that are not taken up by 30 June 2024 will be cancelled by the NRF.
  • Full-time employees of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) or other research institutions are only eligible to apply if they intend to take unpaid leave for the duration of the
  • postdoctoral fellowship.
  • Applicants who are applying for a second NRF Postdoctoral research placement will be eligible if they intend undertaking research on a new project.
  • Applicants who are applying for a second NRF Postdoctoral research placement to continue with research on the same project are not eligible.
  • Applicants who are applying for a third NRF Postdoctoral research placement are not eligible.

Additional requirements

  • The candidates should have excellent research and writing skills.
  • Candidate should also show proven ability to conduct research and produce academic journal articles and peer reviewed publications.
  • The candidate should have research project management skills, able to write funding proposals, and contribute to all activities to support the SARChI Chair T&L.
  • South African or International candidate with an active SA VISA.

  • All candidates must provide a detailed Curriculum Vitae, and the names and full contact details (including email addresses) of at least three traceable and credible referees.
  • A letter of motivation outlining past research work and achievements as well as an indication of intended research in the field of teaching and learning .
  • ID/passport document with a copy of an SA VISA
  • Copy of the doctoral certificate

Award

Applications are invited from suitably candidates to conduct research in the field of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning that contributes to the long-term development of research capacity in this field. The Postdoctoral Fellowship is funded by the NRF, Fellows may only receive two (2) years of support. and is worth R 320 000 per annum (tax free).
