The Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) building situated on the Bunting Road Campus of the University of Johannesburg, plays host to a variety of suitable and sufficient venues where the practical and theoretical components of all Faculty programmes are taught. Well-equipped formal lecturing venues are placed centrally in the building and are shared among departments and programmes. The Faculty also has its own fully equipped and dedicated art and design library.
The Department of Industrial Design offers a comprehensive workshop that allows students to manufacture almost any type of prototype. Included in this workshop are a wide variety of industrial machinery, a comprehensive store of hand tools, two vacuum-forming machines, a complete welding shop and an industrial spray booth.
Keeping it at the forefront in terms of current industrial design practice, the Department also has an extensive Rapid Prototyping Centre with three 3-axis CNC routers, a CNC laser-cutter, and four fuse-deposition modellers (3D printers). The workshop size and layout allows for complete student year groups to be able to work comfortably in the environment, with a full-time Senior Workshop Technician and two Assistants available for advice and assistance. The department also has a custom 35-seat computer lab with high spec graphics computers, high-speed Internet access and the latest CAD and digital software suites. The Department also has a dedicated photographic studio and equipment to enable students to document their work. Each year group have dedicated studios with Wi-Fi access and permanent digital projection systems. Honours students additionally having their own boardroom, individual computers and A3 digital graphics tablets. Masters students have dedicated office spaces with individual computer workstations and A3 digital graphics tablets.
