Our Future. Reimagined.
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has demonstrated a strong commitment to climate action through the development and implementation of comprehensive plans and policies. Central to these efforts is the UJ Energy, Resource, Waste, and Sustainability (ERWSus) Plan and Policy, which outlines the university’s strategies for promoting environmental sustainability across its operations. This policy, first drafted for the 2021-2025 period and reviewed in 2022, serves as a guiding framework for UJ’s sustainability initiatives.
In alignment with its sustainability objectives, UJ has actively engaged in collaborative efforts with local government and community groups to address climate change challenges. A notable example is the partnership between UJ and the City of Johannesburg, facilitated through the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. This collaboration involved a study aimed at assessing the deployment of photovoltaic systems and solar water heaters within the city’s geographic area. Utilising artificial intelligence superimposed on a Geographic Information System (GIS), the project sought to determine the prevalence and efficiency of these installations, thereby informing policy development for future sustainable energy projects.
Further exemplifying its commitment to climate action, UJ has engaged in international collaborations to enhance environmental sustainability. In July 2024, the university, along with five Southern African partner universities, secured a €1.8 million grant for the ‘Towards Enhancing Sustainable and Innovative Environmental Change Solutions’ (TESIECS) initiative. Coordinated by UJ, this three-year project aims to develop and promote creative, locally contextual solutions to environmental challenges, facilitating capacity enhancement for students and staff, and training cohorts of postgraduate students to become environmental thought leaders and sustainability champions.
Additionally, UJ has established partnerships with non-governmental organisations to advance climate innovation and circular economy practices. In September 2023, UJ’s Centre of Ecological Intelligence, in collaboration with the African Circular Business Alliance (ACBA), embarked on initiatives to drive research development, attract investment opportunities, and promote the adoption of climate technologies across Africa. This partnership underscores UJ’s dedication to fostering sustainable development through collaborative efforts.
Through these strategic collaborations and the implementation of its ERWSus Plan and Policy, the University of Johannesburg not only addresses climate change within its own operations but also contributes to broader community and governmental efforts, exemplifying a holistic approach to environmental sustainability.
