The Infrastructure and Operations group focuses on UJ’s foundational technologies, including: e-mail, data-collaboration, data centers and server farm. This area enables delivery of services, provides communication and collaboration services and advances system support services in partnership with departments, labs and centers (DLC’s).

​Key responsibilities include:

  • ​System operations and installations: Support of key construction projects across UJ infrastructure.
  • Server and System administration
  • Ensure reliable and secure operations and proactive monitoring. This includes redundancy planning, capacity planning, scalability planning and disaster recovery planning.
  • Maintain the technical infrastructure architecture to ensure high user satisfaction, cost efficient operations and a secure and reliable landscape.
  • Security patch management: deployment of security updates on UJ systems, servers & desktops & ensuring virus protected environment.
  • SQL database management: Management & support of UJ databases & database sizes.
  • Hardware & software inventory: Replacement and upgrade of hardware and Microsoft software licenses.
  • Vendor management: Engagement with vendors, contractors & consultants on projects and IT solutions.

System Administration:​

  • ​The administrative systems area focuses on enterprise-wide systems that are critical to administration at UJ.
  • Responsibilities include providing and improving systems support, availability & capacity management.
  • This area includes usability and accessibility services that help facilitates effective use of IT resources and liaison both with students and UJ staff on innovation & latest Technology.
  • Maintain and Support collaborative workspaces
  • ​Ensuring data integrity, make sure that system information is accurate.

Web unit

The Web Unit focuses on co-ordination, implementation and management of web communications of the University of Johannesburg. The Web Team also ensures an effective quality control of online communication and

corporate web presence, while enforcing online content governance and best practices in line with the overall business strategy. The Web Unit promotes the institutions digital footprints internationally.

  • Web design
  • Loading and managing web content
  • Search Engine Optimisation
  • Implementing digital policies, procedures and strategy
  • Providing online content support for all internal content managers and web authors
  • Offers web based communications technology to the institution
