Purpose

The purpose of the SLP ‘Media trends and techniques for Public Relations’ is to equip the student with knowledge to critically analyse the use of traditional and digital media in Public Relations. Professionalism is important in the digital post-truth age, where content on online platforms is often not trusted given the rise of Artificial Intelligence, deep fakes and disinformation which negatively impact strategic communication disciplines, democracy and the social good. In this SLP, professional ethical values are instilled together with an adoption of consultative communication, problem-solving and leadership approaches, while displaying mutual respect within the communities in which they function. This is done through adopting an approach based on the values of Ubuntu whereby it is advocated that a person achieves excellence insofar as s/he shares a way of life with others and cares for their quality of life.

Career Opportunities

In Public Relations and related industries, there is a market-demand for competencies to create, produce and manage content for media platforms, whether on social media, or old media platforms. The SLP is ideal for workplace professionals who wish to pursue a career in public relations, this SLP provides the opportunity for a path to professional development and the option to allow for career changes in related communication disciplines. It is envisaged that this SLP will provide a springboard to those already employed, but with no formal qualifications to obtain one. Doing so can potentially increase their access to further study in line with lifelong learning.
