Purpose

The purpose of the extended year is aimed at access for success in terms of their foundational provision, i.e. in providing alternative access in the fields of Economics and Econometrics. Students are given foundational provision covering relevant academic skills together with subject-related themes, required to facilitate learning in the regular modules of Bachelor of Commerce degree programmes. The combination of foundational modules enables students to develop a comprehensive perspective and effective strategies for adjusting to, and meeting the demands of, the higher education environment with the purpose of being successful in the chosen Bachelor of Commerce programme. The purpose of the qualification is to equip students with the necessary theoretical and quantitative economic and econometric knowledge and skills in order to perform their duties as economists/ econometricians in the private and public sectors of the economy.

Admission Requirements

A minimum APS of 25 with Mathematics or 28 with Mathematical Literacy. English 4 (50%), Mathematics 3 (40%) or Mathematical Literacy 6 (70%). Technical Mathematics is not accepted.


Selection Process

Selection is based on academic credit. Only new first time entering candidates are considered for admission into BCom extended degree programmes. This means that those who previously enrolled at a Higher Education Institution, do not qualify.
