DHET Publication Subsidy

The University of Johannesburg has implemented a DHET subsidy disbursement scheme whereby a differentiated payment is made to researchers in terms of articles published in DHET accredited international journals as opposed to South African journals.

Fifty percent of the total subsidy amount received from the DHET is allocated to the faculties that generated the funds.

More about the DHET subsidy

In the case of internationally accredited journal articles (the ISI, ISBN, IBSS lists) the disbursement of the portion of the subsidy that accrues to the faculty is as follows:

A minimum of 70% goes to the researcher
A maximum of 30% accrues to the faculty

In the case of DHET accredited SA journal articles the disbursement of the portion of the subsidy that is transferred to the faculty is as follows:

A minimum of 50% goes to the researcher
A maximum of 50% accrues to the faculty

In the case of subsidies received with respect to books, chapters in books and conference proceedings within faculties, the DHET does not supply detailed feedback on the success of claims.

The university simply receives a lump sum as payment for the claims submitted in these categories. It is thus not possible to allocate the subsidy to the individual researchers who produced these outputs in the same manner as that accrued by accredited articles.

As an incentive to researchers who have produced these research outputs the payment specified below is proposed.

50% of the total subsidy amount will be allocated to the faculties that generated the funds – proportionally to the claims submitted.

Conference Proceedings

In the case of conference proceedings the disbursement will be as follows:

A minimum of 50% will go to the researcher
A maximum of 50% will accrue to the faculty

Books and Book Chapters

In the case of books and chapters in books the disbursement will be as follows:

A minimum of 70% will go to the researcher
A maximum of 30% will accrue to the faculty
