UJ Shines at National 3MT Competition

The RCD unit submitted its two exceptional UJ representatives (Mosa Khasu – 2024 first place institutional winner and Refilwe Chilo – 2024 second place institutional winner) to compete in the 2024 National 3MT competition hosted by the University Free State on the 25th of October. UJ’s delegates impressed the judges with their compelling presentations and ability to effectively communicate their research to a diverse audience. A special commendation goes to Refilwe Chilo, whose outstanding performance earned a well-deserved third-place award in the national competition. Please click here for the VC Newsletter highlight.

“The experience of meeting doctoral candidates from other Universities and hearing (in the simplest form) the exciting research they are doing was amazing. I got to network with them and understood that some challenges in this PhD journey are more common than I had realized. I am grateful for the support and encouragement I received from the UJ Research Capacity Development team (RCD), it made a massive difference. Participating in these competitions was worth the time, effort and experience, coming home with a win was a plus.” – Refilwe Chilo

UJ PhD Candidate Triumphs at SANORD 3MT Competition

In addition, the RCD unit submitted our 2023 Institutional 3MT winners’ entry to compete at the 2024 SANORD 3MT competition. We are thrilled to report that Odifentse Lehasa has been crowned the regional winner of this prestigious competition. Odifentse’s captivating presentation impressed judges and showcased the groundbreaking research at UJ. The SANORD 3MT competition brings together talented doctoral candidates from universities across Southern Africa and the Nordic countries, fostering research collaboration and knowledge exchange on an international stage.

As this year’s Regional Winner, Odifentse will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the SANORD Conference 2024 and compete in the 3MT annual showcase. The conference is scheduled for 4-6 December at the University of the Western Cape, Bellville Campus, Cape Town, South Africa. We wish Odifentse all the best and hope to see her bring the trophy home to South Africa! Please click here for the UJ News highlight.

I am truly honoured to be chosen as the regional winner of the SANORD three-minute thesis (3MT) competition, representing the University of Johannesburg. Participating in the UJ institutional, national, international and now regional 3MT competitions has helped me to sharpen my presentation skills and to gain the confidence to discuss the societal contribution of my research with others. I am immensely thankful for the support of my supervisor, Professor Uche Okonkwo, and the RCD Unit at the Postgraduate School, University of Johannesburg; without both of you, this achievement would not be possible. – Odifentse Lehasa
