About Dr Erna Bruwer

Biography:

Dr. Bruwer holds a PhD in Zoology, specializing in identifying biochemical genetic markers in hybrids of Synodontis zambezensis and Synodontis nigromaculatus (Mochokidae), and a diploma in Health Science Education from WITS (2015). She teaches Anatomy to health professionals and focuses her research on education in health sciences and social impact studies, particularly within the Deaf community. Her work addresses the challenges faced by individuals with hearing impairments, promoting equitable healthcare access by equipping Health Science students with an understanding of Deaf culture and South African Sign Language (SASL). She integrates these elements into the Optometry curriculum, developing tailored eye care procedures for Deaf patients to enhance clinical care and patient outcomes.

Publications

Dr. Bruwer is currently finalizing a teaching and learning article that explores predictors of success for first-year Health Science students based on their matric results.
