This is the Chinese course for students who have reached a basic level of competence in the language.
Intermediate Mandarin (Module 1)
Course Summary
This course is a continuation of the Introductory Mandarin courses. This course enables learners to further develop their language skills. By the end of the course students should be able to grasp more grammatical concepts and sentence structures, which will enable them to understand more complex sentences and to communicate more fluently.
Teaching methods
The course is tutorial based with a combination of class activity and group work; use of audio-visual material as teaching aids (CDs and DVDs). Supplementary material and homework is prepared by the teacher.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able to:
- Have a good command of another 150 Chinese characters.
- Understand frequently used sentences and expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance.
- Use what they have learnt to generate new sentences.
- Grasp about 20 new communicative function items and 20 new grammar items.
- Have certain knowledge of characters and start to write understand and how to use Chinese
- dictionaries.
Intermediate Mandarin (Module 2)
Course Summary
This course is the continuation of the previous course, Intermediate Mandarin (Module 1). It enables learners to further develop their language skills as well as the ability to communicate in social settings. By the end of the course students should be able to grasp more grammatical concepts and sentence structures systematically, which will enable them to communicate more fluently. Students should be able to recognize most of the characters in the textbook and be able to write more characters.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able to:
- Have a good command of 150 new Chinese words and expressions.
- Understand frequently used sentences and expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance.
- Use what they have learnt to generate new sentences.
- Grasp about 30 new communicative function items and 30 new grammar items.
- Have certain knowledge of characters and be able to write more characters.
- Feel much more confident to communicate in Chinese.
