BA Honours Degree in History

The Department offers a rigorous history honours programme, with five modules and a regular seminar that brings in historians to present their work from all over South Africa and from overseas. All students who register for a BA Honours in History are required to complete core courses and write an honours research essay based on original research. Full time students complete the programme in one year, while those registered part-time have two years to complete the degree.

Admission Requirements for Hons: 

You must complete History 3A & 3B (or their equivalent), with an average mark of 65%. Our programme has limited spaces and we cannot accomodate students with marks lower than these.

Applicants for History Honours must:

1. apply online through the UJ application portal (this is where you upload your academic transcript and proof of prior degrees)

2. and email a written motivation of about 500 words, explaining why you want to do an honours degree in history (to the email addresses below) AS WELL AS a sample of academic writing from your third year.

3. Applicants may be asked for an interview prior to acceptance. Please note that we cannot accept applicants without evidence of completing a BA, and a full academic transcript. ​

Our compulsory core modules include 'Theory and Historiography' (HIS8X02), and the year-long 'Research Essay' (HIS8X20) for which students will be guided by a thesis supervisor.  In addition, students take three other modules: in 2021, we are offering classes with the following themes:  'Historical Archives and Databases' (HIS8X06-- a specialisation module), African History and Gender History.

Masters Degree (HIS9X01 and HIS9X02)

If accepted by the Department, students may register for a Full Research Masters Degree which requires the completion of a dissertation demonstrating the candidate’s ability to conduct independent academic research in the broad field of history.

Doctoral Degree (HIS10X1 and HIS10X2) 

If accepted by the Department for doctoral study, students may register for a Doctoral Degree which requires the completion of a substantial dissertation which makes an original contribution to the state of knowledge in the field of history.
