Simulation is a learning environment that simulates reality and the simulated scenarios happen in a predetermined way.
The simulation training is important as learners are trained on team work, leadership and communication. Students are trained and assessed on how to react to conditions as they would under real life circumstances. Clinical skills, attitudes, knowledge and reasoning are evaluated. Mannequins , computerized case scenarios and other medical assessments instruments are used in this set up. Gaba (2004), describes simulation as ” a strategy to mirror, anticipate or amplify real situations with guided experience in a fully interactive way”.
The clinical training facility was established in September 2014 with collaboration between UJ, Phillips and the department of Higher Education and Training. Since its inception the Simulation lab has enabled students to practice procedures and skills before performance on actual patient providing them with the necessary confidence and skills that are acquired. The value of this practice is unquestionable but it does not replace the actual clinical exposure. It prepares the students for transition into the real clinical environment. Students are provided with maximum learning experiences and acquisition of psychomotor skills such as suturing, vital signs monitoring ,etc. Simulation increases standardization and can guarantee same experience for every learner.
Our clinical scenarios are created through the art of technology using artificial setting to allow practice in a controlled environment. The environment and scenarios mimics the real clinical setting and the lecturer can control the mannequins response and the patient simulator responds to the interventions given by the student. Sessions are recorded with cameras and microphones and the recorded material will be watched and discussed through debriefing which enables students to see their own actions from the outsiders point of view.
