Prof Kalala Jalama holds both BSc and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Lubumbashi and the University of the Witwatersrand, respectively. He is the current Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering. He has established the Catalysis for Alternative Fuels research group in the Department of Chemical Engineering after joining the institution in 2009. His research expertise includes synthesis, characterization and application of various materials as catalyst for the synthesis of alternative fuels, such as synthetic hydrocarbons (Fischer-Tropsch synthesis), biodiesels, etc. He is the recipient of the UJ Vice-Chancellor Distinguished Award: Promising Researcher of the Year 2014.
