Title: Head of Department & Senior Lecturer, Department of Industrial Design
Angus Donald Campbell is the Head of the Department of Industrial Design at the University of Johannesburg. He is a qualified industrial designer with a Masters degree and over a decade of university lecturing, research and freelance design experience. His design research focuses on sustainable innovation at the nexus of social, technological and ecological systems within the complex South African context. This is evidenced through multiple publications, conference papers and postgraduate student supervision.
Campbell’s Masters in Industrial Design (Technikon Witwatersrand, 2003) focused on developing new stylistic possibilities for African product design inspired by African cultural heritage and foregrounded his current transdisciplinary Doctorate in Development Studies focused on technology innovation by urban farmers in Johannesburg. He is co-founder and coordinator of the Design Society Development DESIS Lab where he heads up the LOCAL Design in the Global South research area. He was a co-founder of the Izindaba Zokudla: Conversations About Food project focused on innovation in Soweto’s food system, and a board member of the Museum of African Design (MOAD), before it closed in 2017.
Campbell has taught in the field of Industrial Design firstly as a Lecturer at the Technikon Witwatersrand (2003-) and then as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg (2010-) after its merger with the aforementioned institution. He has taught across the majority of modules and year groups in the Department and currently is the Postgraduate Coordinator. Multiple students have been awarded under his lectureship in national and international competitions including the Good Design Award (2019), Association of Rotational Moulders of Southern Africa (ARMSA) Student Design Award (2005, 2007, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015); the Plastics Institute of Southern Africa (PISA) Student Design Award (2004, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015); The Eco Design Competition (2011, 2012); Designboom Seoul International Design Competition (2010); Eskom Energy Efficient Lighting Design Competition (2010); INDEX: AIGA Aspen Design Challenge: Designing Water’s Future (2009); and DESIGN 21: Social Design Network: Power to the Pedal (2008). His freelance design work has included the following clients: SAB Miller (SA), Jacqueline Rabun (UK), MacMillan Publishing (UK), WAACS (NL) and Phumani Paper (SA).
