Edwin Mmutlane graduated with a PhD degree in 2004 from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, under the joint supervision of Professors Joseph Michael and Charles de Koning. He was an exchange student sponsored by the DFG in Prof. Hans-Gunther Schmalz’s group at the University of Cologne in 2002. After completing his PhD, he joined Prof. Albert Padwa’s group at Emory University as a post-doctoral researcher partly sponsored by South Africa’s National Research Foundation. In 2006 he returned to South Africa to join the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research as a research chemist involved in the synthesis of small molecules as potential anti-malarial, anti-TB and anti-HIV agents. He progressed to become a senior researcher then research group leader, a position he held briefly before joining the University of Johannesburg Kingsway Campus as a Senior Lecturer in 2013, where he teaches undergraduate chemistry courses and co-supervises post-graduate students. His research interests are homogenous catalysis and the synthesis of natural products with potential medical applications.
