Background
Before the trip we had a predeparture orientation which prepared me for the trip and what to expect on the plane. I also got to meet the rest of the students who would be going.
University of Connecticut
On the 4th of October we made our way to the United States of America for the Uconn Cyber Case competition at the University of Connecticut. We had a long flight which took us fifteen hours to arrive at Hartsfield Jackson airport in Atlanta where we took a connecting flight to the Bradley international airport. The University of Connecticut hosted us in one of their fancy hotels (The Nathan Inn) which is situated right on their campus. Upon arrival all students had to check into the hotel. Team members were made to sleep together; I had an American roommate who studies at the San Diego state University.
On the 6th of October we had breakfast and had a team building exercise and straight after had a trip to Newport and got to have a tour at the Elms and Breakers mansions. After our tour we headed back to the university and got back to dinner with some GE professionals who gave us career advice and prepared us for the case. Straight after the dinner we received our case study which we had twenty four hours to complete.
The 7th of October teams were given the day to prepare their presentations. The case presentation helped me learn to work and get along with new people. The case challenge taught me to think critically within a short space of time.
The 8th of October was case presentation day. Teams had mixed emotions, some excited and some nervous about presenting their project to the chosen panel. Teams started presentations from 9am to 1 pm, after all the teams had presented a top 3 was announced. My team was part of the top 3. The three teams then had to prepare a final presentation which they had to present to another panel who would decide on the winners. Team JMCG Consulting (my team) came third place throughout the whole competition.
The 9th of October day was departure day where all teams had to leave the university and return to their cities and countries.
Overall Conclusion
The trip was a great travel and learning experience. I enjoyed getting the case and coming up with solutions. It was also lovely making new friends. The University of Connecticut was a great host.
