CARINBE Postdoctoral Fellow wins University of Johannesburg’s GES 4.0 SI Award

Dr. Samson Olaoluwa Faboye, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Applied Research and Innovation in the Built Environment, is one of the recipients of the University of Johannesburg’s prestigious Global Excellence and Stature 4.0 for Societal Impact (GES 4.0 SI) award for the 2025 cohort. This will enable his postdoctoral research at the Centre for Applied Research and Innovation in the Built Environment (CARINBE) under the erudite mentorship of Professor Innocent Musonda.

The GES 4.0 for Societal Impact Scholarships and Fellowships aim to support and empower postgraduate students and postdoctoral research fellows across various disciplines. This prestigious fellowship is dedicated to researchers conducting groundbreaking, multidisciplinary studies that engage multiple academic entities and contribute to innovative, sustainable solutions with a tangible societal impact.

Dr. Faboye earned his PhD in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Johannesburg, specialising in Urban Policy and Governance. His PhD research has been well received globally and presented at conferences such as the 2023 Canadian Association for African Studies Conference at York University Toronto and the REAL CORP (International Conference on Urban Planning and Regional Development in the Information Society) Conferences in 2023 and 2024.

Dr. Faboye was also a recipient of prestigious international Fellowships that enabled the completion of his PhD, some of which were the Adam Smith Fellowships (2022/23) offered by the Mercatus Centre of George Mason University, USA and the Social Science and Research Council Next Generation Doctoral Dissertation Completion Fellowships (2023/24) courtesy of the Carnegie Fund, USA.

He holds a Master of Urban Studies (Politics and Governance Speciality) from the University of the Witwatersrand (2021), M.Tech (2012) and B.Tech (2010) degrees in Architecture from the Federal University of Technology, Akure. With extensive experience in both industry and academia, Dr. Faboye is a mentee participant in the UNESCO Mentorship for Africa Heritage Professionals Programme and a member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), where he contributes to initiatives aimed at increasing the listing of World Heritage Sites in Africa. He is a registered Architect with the Architects’ Registration Council of Nigeria. He has also served in various capacities across diverse institutions, further enriching his architecture, heritage conservation, and sustainable development expertise. Bringing this wealth of interdisciplinary experience to his postdoctoral fellowship, Dr. Faboye is committed to advancing research that bridges academia and industry, fostering innovation for lasting societal benefit. His research at CARINBE will examine sustainability themes in contemporary housing development in South Africa and contribute to ongoing research endeavours at CARINBE, which will contribute to sustainable innovations in the built environment
