The award for Best PhD Presentation at the Southern African Mathematical Sciences Association Conference held in November went to UJ student, Janet Osaye.

Supervised by the institution’s esteemed graph theorist, Prof Peter Dankelmann, Osaye’s study, “Bounds on average eccentricity of graphs”, presented old and new results on the average eccentricity of graphs, particularly upper bounds for triangle-free and C4-free graphs in terms of order and minimum degree.

Osaye said she is passionate about problem solving and motivating youngsters, especially girls, to take up careers in mathematics.
