In 2007 the UJ Council approved a Recruitment and Retention Strategy for Academic Staff. In terms of this strategy, the Vice-Chancellor may, amongst other recruitment and retention strategies, approve the supplementation of the remuneration package of individual academics who can add (or who already add) substantial beyond-the-norm value to the institution in pursuit of its strategic goal of internationally competitive research. Such a supplementation of remuneration is therefore designed to assist in recruiting individual academics or in retaining the services of such academics.​
