Meet the Team

​​​​​​ Professor Shireen MotalaProfessor Shireen Motala was a Director of the Education Policy Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand from 1999 until 2010.  She holds a PhD in Education from the University of the Witwatersrand. In March 2010, she was appointed as the Director of the UJ Postgraduate Research Centre, and in 2016 she was appointed as the Senior Director of the Postgraduate School. Her responsibilities include leading the university-wide strategy for improving enrolment at a postgraduate level, providing research support for postgraduate students, and ensuring that the throughput of postgraduate students improves in the institution. Shireen has held numerous leadership roles related to Higher Education including: Chairperson of the Education Policy Consortium, Chairperson of the UNESCO South African, and inaugural president of the South African Research Association (SAERA). In 2010 she was appointed by the Minster of Higher Education and Training to serve on the Council of Higher Education (CHE) and in 2013 to serve on the Ministerial Task Team to review the national Senior Certificate examination. Her research record is substantial and includes publications in journals and books and editorship of local and international journals. Her research interests and expertise have been in the areas of education financing and school reform, access and equity, and education quality.  
​​​ Lerato Diale Lerato Diale joined the Postgraduate School in 2015. She holds two positions within the School: she is the Personal Assistant to the Senior Director of the School and the School’s Secretary. She has a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree in Accounting, and will begin a Postgraduate Diploma in Law through UJ’s Faculty of Law in the Second Semester of 2016.
Kelebogile Chaka Kelebogile Chaka joined the Postgraduate School in April 2016. She works at the front desk as a Receptionist, and acts as a communication link between postgraduate students at UJ and Postgraduate School staff. She has a bachelor of commerce Degree and is studying toward her Honours.
Postgraduate Fund Management
​​​ Praveen SinghPraveen Singh held the position of a principal accountant at the University of KwaZulu-Natal from 2008 to 2011. He has a Postgraduate qualification in Commerce including a Law background. In 2011 he took up a position as an Accountant at the University of Johannesburg's Finance Division. In 2014 he was appointed as the Head of the Postgraduate School's Postgraduate Fund Management department. In this capacity, he has been responsible for a wide range of programs including leading the university-wide strategy for improving enrolment at postgraduate level, and ensuring improved throughput of registered local and international postgraduates. He has also been heavily involved in the managing of the accounting and financial operations within the Postgraduate Fund Management department. 
Dudu MbathaDudu Mbatha has worked for the South African Revenue Service from November 1995 to December 2001 as an Income Tax Assessor and VAT Auditor. She was then appointed as a VAT Consultant by Ernst & Young in January 2002 to August 2007. In October 2007 to November 2008 she worked for KPMG as a VAT Consultant. She joined the University of Johannesburg in October 2010 and works as a Bursary Administrator at the Postgraduate School. Dudu has a National Diploma in Cost and Management Accounting, a Higher Diploma in Taxation and Bridging Certificate in Theory of Accounting. In order to be an expert in the Financial Industry she has enrolled for an Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets with the University of Johannesburg.
Tshediso MsibiTshediso Msibi holds an honours degree from the University of the Free State. He was appointed as an NRF Scholarship Administrator in 2013 at the University of Johannesburg. In 2015 he was appointed as a Financial administrator within the Postgraduate Fund Management department of the Postgraduate school. His portfolios entails the managing the NRF bursaries and scholarships for postgraduate students and Postdoctoral Research Fellows   
Thabiso MasangoThabiso Masango holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours in Community Development and Leadership. In 2014 he was a tutor for Community Development and Leadership. Prior to joining the Postgraduate School, Thabiso worked at the Department of Community Safety as an intern, his work with the  under the Development Policy Research Unit contributed to the development of Gauteng Safety Strategy. He also assisted with a study on the social issues that affect students in schools within the Gauteng Province. He is currently, employed as an intern by the National Research Foundation, and works at the Postgraduate School to assist with the disbursement of NRF bursaries, and to provide administrative support to the Postgraduate Fund Management department.
Research Capacity Development 
Dr Pia Lamberti Pia Lamberti has worked for over 25 years in the education field, 17 of which have been in academic development at tertiary level. While working in the Academic Development and Support Division, she lead the introduction of academic literacies foundation courses for UJ's extended degrees, and the establishment of the UJ Writing Centre. She joined the UJ Postgraduate School in 2013 to head the unit responsible for research capacity development. Her research interests cohere in the area of higher education development, and include academic literacies, postgraduate studies, and the scholarship of research supervision. She draws on her doctoral research in the field of educational linguistics to teach on topics related to research writing.
​​ Megan EngelbrechtMegan Engelbrecht is an Administrative Assistant at the Research Capacity Development Department and joined the team in May 2016. Previously she worked at the Maintenance Call Centre as a Supervisor. She has a background in administration and finance.
